Hair loss is referred to as alopecia or baldness in medical terms. It usually refers to hair loss from the head or other parts of the body, the most common being loss from the head. The hair growth cycle is perennial and on an average 90% of hair is in resting phase and 10% is in shedding or growing phase. Thus, hair loss occurs when shedding of hair is more than the growth of hair.
The hair growth cycle starts with the anagen phase. During this phase hair, cells are distributed amongst hair shaft. Varying from person to person this phase can last anywhere from 2 to 6 years.
The catagen stage follows the anagen phase and is made up of a 2-3 week transitional period in which the hair growth is in the dormant stage. During this stage, the formation of club hair takes place. A club hair occurs when the section of the hair follicle attaches to the hair shaft, cutting the follicle off from its blood supply and the cells that produce new hair. This is a significant phase for hair loss.
The final stage of the hair growth cycle is the telogen or resting phase. This phase lasts for 2 to 4 months and it is this phase that actually leads to hair loss if telogen phase is more than anagen phase.
