Advantages and Disadvantages of FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

Every advanced procedure has its own advantages and disadvantages.   FUE is modern hair transplant technique for extracting hair follicles. The technique makes surgical hair restoration a minimally invasive surgery as it does not involve much intervention on body tissues. The method has overcome a number of disadvantages that the old approach of strip harvesting used to contain.

Following are the advantages of FUE :

  • Virtually invisible scars

Instead of making a linear scar on the back of your head, like FUT, FUE involves making very small, round punches to the back of your head. Each punch comprises of a follicular unit (a group of one to four hairs). These punches go away tiny dot-shaped scars on your head, distinct the long linear scars from FUT that are difficult to hide.

  • Minimal pain after your procedure

Since small punches are completely pushed into your skin, pain after the procedure is minimal. During FUT, an elliptical slit is made into the skin down to where the hair bulbs reside. This slit requires sutures or staple and can cause uneasiness for several days. However, all patients are given medicine to ease the sting.

  • Less downtime

Along with less pain, the small punches necessitate less time to heal than linear scars. No stitches or scalpels are used, so the donor wounds will nurse back to health within just a few days.

  • Ensures a natural-looking hairline

equally FUT and FUE are with a natural-looking hairline and thicker skull of hair. Advancements in transplant technology ensure that transplanted hair looks completely natural.

  • Less risk of complications

A lot of the presumption and physical labor of other hair relocate measures is replaced with robotic speediness and accuracy. This means less risk of difficulties, less scarring, and less downtime.

Following are the disadvantages of FUE

  • Must shave the entire donor area

For most FUE procedures, shave the complete donor area, which is essentially the entire sides and back of the scalp. Longer hair will envelop up the donor area as it heals and the hair grows backside of the head.

  • Larger donor area

The donor area for FUE is typically generously proportioned than for FUT. whilst at the back of scalp is classically harvested during FUT, the surgeon may tap into the higher, lower and side portions of donor area in order to get the right amount of graft for FUE.

  • More fragile and transacted grafts

The grafts that are extracted during FUE tend to be more fragile than those during FUT. Grafts comprise the hair follicle, bulb and a small amount of adjoining tissue. These grafts can be more delicate because they usually contain to some extent less of the protecting dermis and fat than a FUT graft, which is microscopically dissected by surgeon’s hand.

Also, FUE is a “screen” procedure, meaning that the device used to harvest the grafts cannot see through the skin to detect the position of the hair bulb. Therefore, the patient can expect to lose some of the hairs that are harvested due to the transaction, or cutting of the hair above the point of the bulb.

  • Typically more expensive

The FUE procedure tends to be more high-priced than the FUT procedure due to the expertise that is involved.
